Great piece of writing, with which I agree whole-heartedly. In the name of intellectually honest conversation - hopefully without diminishing in ANY way the fact of RFK's f$%&ery - I feel the need to point out that Mr. Jordan is obviously what I will call very functionally autistic, for lack of another description. The sad fact is that I know - we probably all do, or have at least seen - people with children who do suffer terribly from extreme cases of autism; they are non-verbal, aggressive and clearly tortured, often being quite brilliant children trapped in a body or a perceptive/affective prison that prevents them from engaging pleasurably or productively in the life they clearly see going on around them. As you say, there is not cure (yet) and it is truly heartbreaking. This is why autism has come to be referred to over the past decade or so as a spectrum. There are those like yourself who either have it mildly enough or have learned to manage it well enough that nobody - themselves included, for many years - generally things to even apply the label to them. There are those who function and date and marry and work, but only with great difficulty and support. And there are also those who truly will never be able to care for themselves or another in any way. NONE of which is to say that RFK's description or - god-forbid, his final solution - are even remotely ok, but it diminishes the argument against him, I believe, to create any appearance that autism need be nothing more than an annoyance. Don't drink the Kool-aid, and DEFINITELY don't drink the bleach!
